McKenna continues her natural~world themes in this coastal creation called Rhythm of the Sea. Her signature technique of layering her appliqués across borders or onto other blocks is used here. She uses her favorite Hoffman batiks that have since become her "signature" colors.

Note how dark this design is: it was created during a Northwest winter which is clearly reflected, while also in the midst of a darker period for McKenna. "This was inspired by living on an island in the Pacific Northwest. Several of the scenes are what I saw from my window or on my hikes from my studio (especially the leaning trees, the cormorants on the pier and the blue heron high up on a branch.) This design will always have a special place in my heart."

As with all of McKenna's work, the design isn't finished until all the names of the blocks are as delightful as the work itself. Naturally, Rhythm of the Sea would have block names like; Sunset Sonata, Ballads from the Bay, Rock n Roll, Solo Mio, Maestro, and Saltwater Symphony!
